Exposure

I worry sometimes that when my children grow up they will expect to be off of work on a Tuesday at 10am and they will think it's acceptable to wear yoga pants to the office.  My husband and I have very non-traditional work schedules, and we both work more than one job.  Will they resent us for not having weekends off?  Will they understand that just because we are able to work from home at times we are still working just as hard as other mommies and daddies?  I want them to have a good work ethic and just as important, I want them to love their work.  Tonight, we all went to work with Daddy, and the pieces of us that we have passed on to them, sparkled.

My husband.  This man plays the best DJ at our living room dance parties, teaches the kids how to act out scenes from movies and television shows, and fosters their imaginations in ways that make me fall in love with him all over again.  This is him at one of his offices.  He doesn't wear a suit.

And he is this little boy's hero.

And he is this little boy's hero.

My mom told me that when she was watching the kids the other day, my daughter was playing charades.  She pretended she was taking pictures, and then she pretended to put on glasses and type on the computer.  When my mom asked her what she was, she replied, "Mommy".

This little girl feels the music in her soul and she can't help but move to it.  I know this feeling well, and I do my best to support her love of music and dance at every opportunity.

I don't know if what we choose to do for a living will help, harm, or make no difference at all in their futures.  But I have to believe that exposing them to the arts and nurturing their creativity will bring them at least some benefits.  If nothing else, I know it brings them joy, and being able to experience it together as a family fills my heart.
